Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story house with light beige horizontal siding, a gabled roof, a small covered front porch with dark door, and shrubs along the foundation, set behind a mown lawn and wet sidewalk with large leafy trees on both sides.

A mini-split compressor in this area sits idle through most of the calendar year, and long off-periods let small faults settle quietly rather than announce themselves. Homes in Sarpy County, NE run cooling about three months a year, from June through August. The contractor sizing a new system has to account for a unit that will start cold each June, ramp hard when temperatures peak, and then stand down again. That start-stop cycle puts more stress on the contactor and the refrigerant circuit than steady runtime would, which is exactly why refrigerant charge and electrical connections are the first things a good installer verifies before commissioning.

Electrical service is where a mini-split installation either moves forward or stalls. Half the homes in Sarpy County, Nebraska were built in 1996 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house built to that generation's wiring standards carries a service panel sized for the loads common then, and a ductless system draws differently than what that panel was laid out for. The contractor's first real question is whether the existing electrical will support the new unit without a panel upgrade. That answer changes the scope of the job before the equipment is ever ordered.

The Mini-split Components Involved in an HVAC Installation

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by refrigerant lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler is the piece a homeowner sees most clearly. It mounts high on an interior wall in the room being conditioned and delivers treated air directly into that space. The outdoor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil that make the whole system run.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, carrying the refrigerant between them. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor head to move moisture out of the house, and a dedicated electrical circuit feeds the outdoor unit from the breaker panel.

The drawing shows the general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how they are positioned and routed in your specific home.
